Formby Civic Society Planning Applications

Monitoring planning applications is an important part of the work of the Society. It is the means whereby we seek to influence development and change so that they occur in a way which preserves the character of Formby and ensures that it remains an attractive place in which to live, and does minimum damage to the very special landscape of the area and the rare fauna and flora which inhabit it. There is seldom space in the Newsletter’s Planning Matters to mention specific planning applications, and the purpose of these web pages is to provide a summary account of all the applications on which we have made representations to the Council.

The work is done by the Society’s Amenities and Planning Subgroup which consists of the Amenities Secretary as chair, the Society’s Chair (ex officio) and currently four other members of the Society; the Subgroup meets from time to time.

Subgroup members have access to all the documents relevant to each case, and documents drafted by the Amenities Secretary to be presented to a public body in the name of the Society are first vetted and, on occasions, amended by members of the Subgroup. In this way, we aim to avoid idiosyncratic assessments creeping into our decision-making.  As a further guard against such bias, we report fully to the Society's Committee on all the representations we make. In the course of a year, we review approximately 250 planning applications and make representations to the Council on approximately 25 of them.
